Tesla Robotaxi: Is Waymo's Reign Over?
After a 48-hour test drive of the 2026 Model Y Juniper with FSD v13.2.9, I’m convinced: this is a robotaxi in all but name. Forget supervised, this thing drove me door-to-door, hands-free, on multiple trips across Los Angeles. Is it perfect? No. It still makes the occasional odd routing choice or slow-speed quirk, but honestly, so does Waymo. And unlike Waymo, I wasn’t confined to a tiny geofenced area. This thing can roam.
This raises some serious questions. Is Tesla’s wider range a game-changer, even if its AI isn’t quite as polished as Waymo’s in limited areas? What are the real-world implications of a robotaxi that can go anywhere? How will this impact ride-sharing, public transportation, and even car ownership itself?
My experience suggests FSD v13 is a quantum leap from earlier versions. While safety concerns with any autonomous system are valid, are we overestimating the risks of FSD compared to the dangers posed by distracted human drivers? Considering the staggering number of fatalities caused by human error, is a robust, constantly improving AI like Tesla’s FSD ultimately the safer option?
Let’s hear your thoughts. Have you experienced the new FSD? How does it compare to other autonomous systems? Is a Tesla robotaxi future closer than we think? What are the biggest hurdles and opportunities ahead?
